Alice Woods was born in Goshen, IN in 1871, and studied at the Indiana School of Art, the Shinnecock Summer School of Art, the Art Students League in New York, the New York School of Art, and the Academie Colarossi in Paris. Her instructors included T.C. Steele and William Forsyth in Indianapolis, and William Merritt Chase in New York. She married the artist Eugene Paul Ullman in Paris in 1903. They had two sons, the sculptor Allen Ullman and artist Paul Ullman. She played an active part in the Paris art scene during the early part of the 20th century. In addition to her painting, Alice wrote and illustrated six novels that described women liberation efforts during the Victorian Age. Source: Skirting the Issue, by Newton and Weiss
