Arnold Turtle was born and raised in Birmingham, England where he began a career in insurance, dabbling in art and music on the side.
He emigrated to the United States and changed careers, going into accounting but was drawn ever-closer to art. He took night classes at the Chicago Art Institute.
His initial exhibit in Chicago in 1929 was considered very much a critical and commercial success and his career was born.
He was a frequent visitor to Brown County to paint.
