A native of Holland and a Chicago-based decorator by trade, Derk Smit is well-collected for his excellent Brown County and Western U.S. landscapes.
Smit exhibited at the Hoosier Salon in 1953-1968, receiving six awards over that period.
Smit and his wife moved to Nashville from Chicago in the 1950s and lived there for five years. He then moved to the Santa Barbara, CA area where he lived out the rest of his long life.
