The following information was submitted by a site visitor: George Winter (1810-1876) was born in Portsea, England, but immigrated to New York in 1830. There, he studied at the National Academy of Design but soon moved to Logansport, Indiana to sketch and document Native Americans living along the Wabash. He developed relationships with the Miami and the Potawatomi. He continued to draw and paint these people, also keeping detailed historical records of each work executed. A large collection of Winter's remains at the Tippecanoe County Historical Association. He is well known for his landscapes, frontier genre paintings, and also his portraits like that of Frances Slocum. He died in Lafayette, Indiana.
