re: Hale Aspacio Woodruff

Hale Aspacio Woodruff was born in Cairo, IL and following high school worked and studied for a short period atthe Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis, IN. He went on to study in Paris in 1927 under famous African American artist Henry Ossawa Tanner. He returned to the United States in 1931 and located in Atlanta where he was a fixture in the African American art movement teaching and organizing annual exhibits. Around this time, his interest turned to mural painting and he spent a short time studying the application under Diego Riveria. In the 1940s Woodruff located in New York City and spent years on the faculty of NYU. His style during this period was largely abstract. Woodruff died in New York City in 1980.
