re: Jacob Cox

Interiors, Panoramas, Goats The following information was submitted by a site visitor: Jacob Cox (1810-1892) was considered the first professional artist in Indianapolis. Although born in Burlington, New Jersey, he moved to Cincinnati and then Indianapolis as a portrait painter. He had studios above the Morris and Brothers Store and in the Ray Building, both on Washington Street between Meridian and Illinois. His residence was at a house on the 900 block of North Pennsylvania until his death. He was known for his portraits, but Cox preferred to paint landscapes of areas like Fall Creek. Some of his most famous work includes his 6 portraits of Indiana Governors which are now part of the ISM collection. He is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery.
