        <![CDATA[<p>John Cowan Templeton arrived to the Hammond, IN area in around 1908.  He was a trained sign painter&#8212;a job which took him to many locations.  In his free time he executed landscapes.</p>


	<p>In the 1910s he took a night job with Inland Steel and continued to paint with a particular emphasis on the Indiana Dunes.</p>


	<p>The following biographical information was submitted by a site visitor:</p>


	<p>John C. Templeton moved to East Chicago in 1908, where he lived the rest of his life (1958).  As an artist he was mostly self-developed, but he studied at the University of West Virginia, also in Nashville, Detroit, Phoenix, and in Italy.  He was an exhibitor at the Northern Indiana Arts Association, the Hoosier Salon, and had a one-man show at the Chicago Galleries.  He was an Inland Steel employee, painting in his free time and after he retired.  He taught adults at Whiting High School, and also gave private lessons.  He had a simple palate and painted many dunes scenes.</p>

        <![CDATA[<p>Glenn Cooper Henshaw studied at Herron under J. Ottis Adams as well as in Munich and Paris.  Returning to the U.S., he settled in New York and worked largely in pastel capturing city and harbor scenes.</p>


	<p>Henshaw moved to Baltimore and established a studio in Nashville, IN after World War I.</p>


	<p>He was extrememly prolific and a master of pastels.  His early signature appears as &#8220;Hinshaw&#8221; and changed to &#8220;Henshaw&#8221; sometime around 1912.</p>

        <![CDATA[<p>Anthony Buchta grew up in Iowa and attended the Chicago Fine Arts Academy and the Chicago Art Institute.  He worked as a commercial artist in Chicago and was a landscape painter in his free time.</p>


	<p>After making trips to Brown County to paint, he eventually moved to Nashville permanently, purchasing the former home of Edward K. Williams.  He was a bachelor his whole life.</p>


	<p>He is known for his brilliant use of color, particularly violets.</p>

	<p>Mildred Niesse was an Artist Emeritus of the Brown County Art Gallery and a life member there. Her work earned wide acclaim before she studied art with teachers of the Indianapolis Art League in the 1950s.</p>


	<p>She was honored on Nov. 13, 1999 at the Hoosier Salon&#8217;s 75th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary Celebration. She won 40 major awards over the following years.</p>


	<p>She was a member of the Indiana Artists Club, The Hoosier Salon, The Brown County Art Gallery, The &#8220;20&#8221; Artists Group, a Signature member of the Watercolor Society and The Indiana Federation of Art Clubs. She was past president of the Indiana Federation of Art Clubs. Her other memberships The Indiana Historical Society.</p>


	<p>Her work has been exhibited at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. She taught art classes for gifted children at St. Mary School. In 1980, she was commissioned to paint the Memorial Union Building at Indiana University in Bloomington. The painting was reproduced in 500 color lithographs and sold to alumni around the world.</p>]]>

	<p>He eventually came to the attention of Herman Lieber who assisted in getting him enrolled in childrens classes at the Herron Art Institute.</p>


	<p>He later attended Manual High School and studied under Otto Stark and then returned to Herron in 1910.</p>


	<p>His works tend to be very colorful and lively.  Works lacking signatures are not uncommon.</p>

        <![CDATA[<p>The preeminent Indiana artist.  Born in Waveland, Indiana, Steele studied at Asbury College, and also briefly in Chicago and Cincinnati.  He was a noted portraitist for a short period in Battle Creek, MI and then in Indianapolis in the 1870s.</p>


	<p>He enrolled at the Royal Acadamy in Munich in 1878 thanks to the efforts of Herman Lieber and other patrons in Indianapolis.  He returned to Indianapolis in 1885 and opened a studio.</p>


	<p>Steele painted with J. Ottis Adams in Brookville, IN around the 1890 time frame.  It was during this time that his unique impressionist style came to be.  He lost his first wife and remarried and relocated to Brown County in 1907.  The first major artist to take a permanent residence in the area.  Worked regularly in the Nashville area until his death in 1926.</p>


	<p>Toward the end of his life, Steele also maintained a studio at Indiana University&#8217;s Memorial Union in Bloomington.  Several of his portraits are on display at the Indiana Memorial Union.</p>


	<p>His home, The House of the Singing Winds located in Belmont, IN (just outside of Nashville), is now part of the Indiana State Parks system.</p>

	<p>Snyder is one of Indiana&#8217;s most prolific early artists.  Known largely for his dense woodland scenes featuring the beech forests of southern Indiana and the surrounding region.  Snyder often worked in a somewhat blue palette.  He was also known to have done some portraiture.</p>

Self-taught, he became a commercial artist at a very young age.  In later life he devoted himself the pursuit of art for its own sake.  He was always something of an outsider among the Nashville, IN artists.</p>

	<p>C. Carey Cloud (1899-1984) was born just south of Warren, Indiana. He worked as a children’s book illustrator, greeting card designer, and art director in Chicago before becoming a Cracker Jack prize designer. He moved to the village of Nashville in Brown County, Indiana, and became a leisure painter in 1947. He became noted for his attention to detail with paintings of weathered wood and Indiana Farm scenes. He was a guiding force in the planning and development of the Brown County Art Gallery Association’s gallery building and was a three time President of the organization. He has exhibited works in many shows including the Hoosier Salon.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>Born in Chicago, Nellie Knopf studied at the Chicago Art Institute.</p>


	<p>From 1900, she taught and later ran the art department at the Illinois Female College (renamed MacMurray College in 1930) in Jacksonville, IL.</p>


	<p>In the 1910s she spent summer summers painting with Chas. Woodbury in Ogunquit, ME.  And from 1923 on, spent holidays and breaks traveling the Western United States, painting and sketching along the way.</p>

        <![CDATA[<p>Born in Greencastle, IN, L.O. Griffith lived in Nashville, IN the last thirty years of his life, after spending many years in Texas (childhood), St. Louis (art school) and Chicago (career).</p>


	<p>Travelled extensively and has many works set in New Orleans, Texas and Mexico.</p>


	<p>Note:  Not to be confused with Lorenze Griffith (who signed as &#8220;L. Griffith&#8221; ) who also painted in and around Indiana in the early 20th century.</p>

        <![CDATA[<p>Genevieve Goth Graf was the younger sister of famous Indiana artists Marie Goth and was also married to Carl Graf.</p>


	<p>She was a teacher in Indianapolis until she retired in 1956 and then relocated to Brown County in that same year.</p>


	<p>Her painting developed slowly over the years but she was in full swing when she passed away unexpectedly at her Nashville home on December 21, 1961.</p>

        <![CDATA[<p>Michael Steele Churchman was born in Indianapolis and received a degree in civil engineering from Purdue University.  He took up art after retiring from a long career in engineering and construction and over 40 years of running his own business.</p>


	<p>Churchman produced watercolor landscapes, often featuring barns set in his native Indiana.  He also painted Florida landscapes, dock scenes and abstracts (the latter, typically in acrylic).</p>


	<p>Steele Churchman was very much involved with volunteer work on behalf of the Indianapolis Art Center (nee Indianapolis Art League) for over thirty years.</p>
