A very accomplished landscape and still life painter who spent the last half of his life in Nashville, Indiana—V.J. Cariani wound up in southern Indiana through a curious set of events.
Cariani met Marie Goth at the Art Students League in New York in the 1910s. He later fought in World War I and suffered post-traumatic stress disorder. He returned to the United States where Marie Goth reinitiated contact with him and was subsequently brought to Nashville by the efforts of Goth. He remained in ‘Peaceful Valley’ until his death in 1969.
