Anthony Buchta was born in Iowa and studied art in Chicago and eventually moved on to become a teacher himself as well as making a living in commercial art. He began to travel to Brown County in the 1920s and moved there permanently in 1935 and devoted himself to fine art. Buchta did it all – watercolors, printmaking and oil painting and his approach was consistent through all mediums. To wit, he loved producing ‘charming scenes’ and those were often paired with equally ‘charming’ titles. Today’s painting, Summer’s Rustic Charms is right out of that playbook. It’s in a high-key palette and depicts a Brown County homestead complete with the clothes hanging out to dry. The high-key approach isn’t necessarily typical but the fantastic colors are very representative – he loved the purples, pinks and greens. The painting is in perfect condition, was recently cleaned and is housed in an antique reproduction frame. A sweet piece by one of our favorite Brown County artists.
