Anna Mary Newman was born in 1879 in Richmond, Indiana. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1900-1905, the School of Applied and Normal Art in Chicago, and the Overbeck School of Pottery in Cambridge City, IN. She studied with John Elwood Bundy in Richmond, in addition to Ralph Clarkson, John H. Vanderpoel, Charles Francis Browne, and Martha Baker in Chicago.

Anna was best known for her portraiture and participated in many group exhibitions in Chicago and throughout Indiana. She won several awards for her pieces from the Art Institute of Chicago, the Richmond Art Association, and the Indiana State Fair.

She maintained a portrait studio in Richmond until she moved to Fort Wayne in 1911 to take a position as an art teacher at the high school.
