Helen May Gilliatt was born in Orange County, IN in 1902 and studied at the John Herron Art Institute, the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, MA, and the Art Students League in New York City. Her instructors included William Forsyth, Clifton Wheeler, Charles Hawthorne, and Jerry Farnsworth. She had several solo shows in Indianapolis in addition to participating in many Hoosier Salons where she received several prizes for her paintings. Helen worked in both watercolor and oil, and focused primarily on landscapes, floral still lifes, and portraiture. In addition to painting professionally, Helen taught art to preschool children out of her Indianapolis home. Source: Skirting the Issue, by Newton and Weiss
