re: Lotta Guffin

Lotta Hillis was born in Greensburg, Indiana in 1844. She studied music in Cincinnati and in Indianapolis, at North Western Christian University. She began studying painting with Jacob Cox in Indianapolis, in 1873. Soon thereafter, Lotta started showing her work in various exhibitions in Indiana and New York, including the Autumn Exhibition at the National Academy of Design in New York. Lotta focused primarily on portraiture and animal paintings. She supported her family with her painting after her husband became seriously ill. Lotta lived and painted professionally in Indianapolis until 1885. She moved to New York for several years until poor health required that she move back to the Midwest, closer to her family. She lived in Chicago until the end of her life, in 1896. Source: Skirting the Issue, by Newton and Weiss
