Hilah Tanner Drake was born in Newark, NJ in 1877, and studied at the Art Students League in New York City from 1896 to 1902. While there, she took classes with John Twachtman, George Bridgman, H. Siddons Mowbray, and William Merritt Chase, among others.
Hilah married the artist Clifton Wheeler in 1910 and began participating in a variety of group shows throughout Indianapolis. She worked primarily in watercolor, painting still lifes. Hilah also designed bookplates and hand-cut silhouettes. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the Irvington Historical Society.
