re: John Cowan Templeton

John Cowan Templeton arrived to the Hammond, IN area in around 1908. He was a trained sign painter -- a job which took him to many locations. In his free time he executed landscapes. In the 1910s he took a night job with Inland Steel and continued to paint with a particular emphasis on the Indiana Dunes. The following biographical information was submitted by a site visitor: John C. Templeton moved to East Chicago in 1908, where he lived the rest of his life (1958). As an artist he was mostly self-developed, but he studied at the University of West Virginia, also in Nashville, Detroit, Phoenix, and in Italy. He was an exhibitor at the Northern Indiana Arts Association, the Hoosier Salon, and had a one-man show at the Chicago Galleries. He was an Inland Steel employee, painting in his free time and after he retired. He taught adults at Whiting High School, and also gave private lessons. He had a simple palate and painted many dunes scenes. We're very interested in purchasing artwork by John Cowan Templeton. Please contact us if you have pieces you are considering selling.
