Henshaw only exhibited in the Hoosier Salon 1925-1928. - This painting was featured in our weekly email on 7/14/17 along with the following gallery comments: Glenn Cooper Henshaw was born and went to school in Indiana (one of the first to attend Herron) and then promptly left for studies in Europe and a lifetime of travel all over the U.S. and Europe. He ultimately returned to Nashville, Indiana during his final years and the Brown County Art gallery was the recipient of his artistic estate. Like many other native Hoosiers who followed a similar path, he’s always been very well collected within Indiana despite the fact that most of his artistic output occurred outside the state. Henshaw’s production consisted of some oils and many, many pastels. He maintained a studio for several years in New York and the city was very common subject matter for him. But there are also many pieces featuring Baltimore, Indianapolis, Boston, Chicago, Paris, London and Venice among others. Today’s piece, Rio Della Guerra is an exceptional offering. It is one of only eight works that Henshaw exhibited in the Hoosier Salon – two pieces each year between 1925 and 1928. Rio della Guerra (see Wicki entry here) was shown in 1926. The painting (sure, pastel) came to us housed in an older (possibly original) frame. That frame will accompany the sale but it was very underserved. And while we usually try to maintain the historic integrity of the pieces we market, we elected to craft a frame from scratch that channels the look of the time and represents more substantially. That custom, hand-leafed frame is shown above. The piece also includes the original Hoosier Salon tag which (thank god) survived along with Rio della Guerra these ninety-some years later. If you like Henshaw (and what’s not to like?) – this is one to own.
