William McKendree Snyder was born in 1848 in Liberty, Indiana and grew up in Madison, Indiana where he took to art (and the study thereof) at an early age. In the 1870s, he studied with some of the most prominent American instructors of the day and his style evolved to resemble the Hudson River school. Residing in Madison during most of his adult life, Snyder was among the first artists to exploit Brown County, Indiana for painting opportunities in his overall prolific output of Southern Indiana landscapes. Today’s piece Southern Indiana Beeches is a very representative example featuring Snyder’s go-to subject matter and style: an interior forest rendered with realistic precision. The thousands of autumn beech leaves are fairly jumping off the canvas. The painting has been cleaned and conserved and is in excellent condition. The frame is a custom reproduction meant to channel turn-of-the-century styles, hand-finished with a 23K gold lip. A nice example from a 19th century Madison, Indiana realist.

Edgar Forkner was born in 1867 in Richmond, IN and was instrumental in the early development of that art colony. He relocated to Chicago around 1902 and ultimately, Seattle around 1912. His body of work contains some oil paintings but he is really remembered as a watercolorist. Today’s painting, Puget Sound Pier (our title) is a very representative example. The subject is classic Forkner – the Seattle waterfront. Executed in his typically loose style full of moody reflections, light and shadow. A solid work from a notable Richmond, IN artist.

L. O. Griffith was a frequent Brown County visitor prior to 1920 and moved there permanently in 1922. He was very prolific and while his oils are beloved, he was also a very gifted printmaker. He specifically worked in the aquatint process which yielded both monochromatic and multi-plate, colored works. Today’s example, Bridge Over Salt Creek (our title) is a classic example. It’s an aquatint print (open edition) of a sunbathed bridge spanning one of the many creeks running through ‘Peaceful Valley’. The scene is bathed in light and shadow on a summer’s day. Nicely framed (by us!) and ready to hang. We love bringing these modestly-priced, genuine Brown County works to market – something real for every budget.
